Short Biography

I am currently a postdoctoral scientist based in ETH Zurich. A long journey through different fields and disciplines in the East and the West has taken me to this place.

I received all of my primary education in Iran, graduated from Alborz High School, received my B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (heat and fluids) at USB, and my M.S. in Aerospace Engineering (structures) at the Sharif University of Technology. I received my Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering Sciences (in systems, under the supervision of Prof. Mahmoud Hussein in the Phononics Laboratory) as well as a M.S. degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Colorado Boulder. In my Ph.D. thesis, I developed on exact and approximate solutions to nonlinear dispersive elastic waves in metamaterials and phononic crystals. During those years, I got recognized with the Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching Award and the research excellence Vise Award of the Ann and H.J. Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences.

Currently, I work with Prof. Dennis Kochmann in the Mechanics and Materials Laboratory of Institute for Mechanical Systems, one of the eight institutes in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich. My current research is about a new class of soft dissipative multistable metamaterials, from understanding their dynamics and coming up with efficient tools for modeling them to recognizing their applications. Recently, I have been awarded a highly selective Spark grant by the Swiss National Science Foundation, which aims to fund the development of new scientific approaches, methods, and ideas for applications.
